Young people, alcohol and the media

This report presents findings of a mixed-method study exploring how alcohol is represented in media consumed by young people, young people’s own interpretations of these representations, and the influence of the media and celebrities on young people’s attitudes to alcohol and their alcohol consumption. It also examines the views of media professionals on the production of alcohol-related content, the potential influence of the media on young consumers, and the role of the media in health promotion.

XR for Social Impact: A Landscape Review

The XR for Change initiative seeks to encourage dialogue, collaboration, advance equity and inclusion, and inspire creative use of emerging technologies for social impact. XR4C hosts various convenings throughout the year including XR Talk and Play panel discussions, and the XR Brain Jam, a 2-day long event pairing developers and researchers in order to create new XR prototypes for potential research applications. The initiative’s work throughout the year culminates at the XR for Change Summit during the annual Games for Change Festival.

Beyond Checking A Box: A Lack of Authentically Inclusive Representation Has Costs at the Box Office

When I first read Boyz N the Hood, I immediately connected to the material because I went to school in Inglewood and I knew these kids. The representation was authentic and true to the Black experience, both for the protagonists and for the antagonists, and I knew that with John Singleton at the helm of his own story, it would resonate in a big way. What I didn’t know is that authentic representation is so powerful, it changed the culture: Drive-by shootings plunged after kids were able to see themselves on screen.

#TAKETHELEAD: A Review and Comparison of STARZ Diversity Data to Industry Averages

The Center for Scholars & Storytellers (CSS), based in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), was commissioned to evaluate how STARZ, a global streaming media company, compares to the rest of the television industry in terms of diverse representation of gender, race, and their intersection on- screen, behind the camera, and among Senior Leadership. CSS’ findings indicate that STARZ’s diversity data for the reported categories is above the industry average in nearly all instances and in particular when comparing their diversity data for people of color (POC).
